Melt the butter in a 10-inch cast iron skillet over low heat. Remove the skillet from the heat and allow it to cool for a minute or two.

Whisk the brown sugar and cane sugar into the melted butter until smooth. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, stirring until fully combined.

Sprinkle the flour, baking soda, and salt over the wet ingredients. Stir gently until no dry streaks remain.

Fold in the chocolate chips, saving a handful to sprinkle over the top.

Spread the dough evenly in the skillet and sprinkle the reserved chocolate chips over the surface.

For an extra gooey cookie, remove it from the oven while the middle still looks slightly underdone. The residual heat from the cast iron will continue baking it as it cools.
