Decorating for fall doesn’t have to mean buying a houseful of new seasonal décor. Sometimes one simple thing you already own can be used in more ways than you’d expect.

A few years ago, I pulled out one of my plaid blanket scarves and started experimenting with different ways to use it around the house. I ended up finding five simple ways to use a blanket scarf for fall decorating—from the dining table to cozy little touches throughout the house.

If you have an old blanket scarf tucked away in a closet, pull it out. You might be surprised how easily it can add a little warmth, pattern, and coziness to your home this fall.

1. Use a Blanket Scarf as a Fall Table Runner

This one happened completely by accident. I was carrying the scarf through the house to put it away, got sidetracked, and laid it across the dining room table. I stopped in my tracks.

This one is still my favorite.

Loosely draped across the table, a plaid blanket scarf makes such a pretty fall table runner and instantly adds warmth, color, and texture. Add a few simple things you already have, candlesticks, branches, pumpkins, or a pitcher of fall flowers, and you have an easy fall centerpiece without buying a thing.

2. Tuck a Blanket Scarf Into a Basket

I love a good basket strategically placed around the house, especially one with a cozy throw spilling out of it. A blanket scarf works just as well!

Simply tuck one into a basket and let part of it drape casually over the side. It’s such an easy way to add a little warmth, pattern, and fall color to an otherwise empty corner without adding more seasonal décor.

3. Use It as a Cozy Throw

Blanket scarves are surprisingly big, often big enough to double as a small throw! Drape one over the arm or back of a chair or sofa to instantly add a little fall color and pattern.

It’s an especially easy way to make a favorite sitting spot feel cozier for the season without buying another throw blanket.

4. Turn It Into a Fall Garland

Give your blanket scarf a few loose twists to turn it into a soft, oversized garland. Drape it across a mantel, shelf, cabinet, or anywhere you’d normally use a traditional garland.

The plaid fabric adds plenty of color and texture all on its own, making this an easy way to bring a little fall warmth into the room using something you already have.

5. Make a No-Sew Blanket Scarf Pillow Cover

Tuck, flip, and fold…that’s all it took to turn my blanket scarf into a simple DIY pillow cover! No sewing required.

Just wrap the scarf around a pillow you already own, tuck the excess fabric securely in the back, and you have an easy way to add a little plaid and fall color to the room. When the season is over, simply unwrap it and use the scarf again.

A Simple Way to Decorate for Fall

Of all these blanket scarf decorating ideas, using one as a fall table runner is still my favorite. There’s just something about that little bit of plaid that makes the whole room feel warmer and cozier for fall.

And really, that’s what I love most about ideas like these. Decorating for a new season doesn’t have to mean buying a cart full of new décor. Sometimes it’s as simple as pulling something out of a closet and finding a completely new way to use it.
