November always turns my thoughts toward gratitude. As the days grow shorter, the weather turns cooler, and we begin preparing for Thanksgiving, we’re reminded to slow down and consider the many blessings the Lord has given us.

But if we’re honest, thankfulness doesn’t always come naturally.

It’s easy to become so focused on the things that need our attention, the responsibilities waiting to be handled, or the circumstances we wish were different that we overlook the goodness of God in our everyday lives.

I’ve certainly found this to be true in my own life.

That’s why I’ve chosen Cultivating a Heart of Thanksgiving as the theme for this month’s Scripture writing plan.

Throughout November, we’ll spend time in God’s Word learning what it means to be thankful, not just when life is going well, but in every season.

My prayer is that these Scriptures will encourage us to recognize God’s goodness, rest in His faithfulness, and develop hearts that are truly overflowing with thanksgiving.

Why Cultivating a Thankful Heart Matters

The Bible has so much to say about giving thanks.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, we’re reminded:

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

Notice that Scripture tells us to give thanks in everything.

That doesn’t mean every circumstance is good or that we must pretend difficult seasons aren’t difficult. Rather, we can remain thankful for God’s goodness and faithfulness, even when our circumstances are far from what we would choose.

Thankfulness isn’t simply a feeling that comes when everything is going our way. It’s a response to who God is.

When we make a habit of spending time in His Word, we’re reminded of His mercy, His provision, and His promises.

And slowly, as we turn our attention away from everything we lack and toward the One who provides for us, our perspective begins to change.

What We’ll Be Studying This November

This month’s Scripture writing plan includes 30 passages, organized around four important aspects of biblical thanksgiving.

Giving Thanks for Who God Is

We’ll begin by focusing on God’s goodness, mercy, faithfulness, and everlasting love. Before we consider what God has given us, it’s important to remember who He is.

Remembering God’s Blessings and Provision

Next, we’ll spend time reflecting on the many ways God provides for His children. From our daily needs to the gift of salvation, every good gift comes from Him.

Learning Contentment and Gratitude in Every Season

Being thankful isn’t always easy. Some seasons are filled with uncertainty, disappointment, or hardship. These Scriptures will remind us that our contentment and peace are found in the Lord rather than our circumstances.

Living with a Thankful Heart

Finally, we’ll consider how gratitude should influence the way we live. A thankful heart is reflected in our words, our worship, our prayers, and the way we treat others.

How to Use the November Scripture Writing Plan

If you’ve never participated in a Scripture writing plan before, getting started is simple!

All you need is a Bible, a notebook or journal, and a few quiet minutes each day.

Begin by reading the assigned Scripture passage in your Bible. Then, slowly write the verses in your notebook, paying attention to the words as you go.

You might find it helpful to read the passage a second time, consider what it teaches about the Lord, and spend a few moments in prayer.

You don’t need a beautiful journal, special pens, or an elaborate Bible study routine.

The purpose isn’t to create perfectly lettered pages. It’s to spend intentional time in God’s Word.

And if you miss a day? Simply pick up where you left off. There’s no need to rush or feel discouraged.

The goal is consistency in God’s Word, not perfection in completing a calendar.

Making Thanksgiving a Way of Life

As we move through November, my hope is that we’ll remember that thanksgiving isn’t limited to a holiday on the calendar.

It’s something we can practice every day.

In the ordinary moments of homemaking, in the busyness of caring for our families, in seasons of abundance, and even in times of uncertainty, there are opportunities to remember the goodness of the Lord.

Some days, gratitude may come easily. Other days, we may need to deliberately turn our hearts toward the truths found in Scripture.

And that’s one of the reasons I love Scripture writing so much.

It gives us an opportunity to slow down, quiet the distractions around us, and fill our hearts and minds with God’s Word.

As Psalm 107:1 reminds us:

“O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”

May we carry that truth with us throughout November and long after Thanksgiving has passed.
