Homemaking is a good and worthy calling, but it is also work that can wear us down if we aren’t careful.

There are always more dishes to wash, more clothes to fold, more meals to make. And if we aren’t intentional, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we must always be producing, always doing, or we aren’t being faithful.

But the truth is, the Lord calls us not only to diligence in our work, but also to rest in Him. Rest that renews our spirits and reminds us that we are not sustained by our own strength, but by His grace.

Today I want to encourage you with some simple ways to embrace rest as a Christian homemaker, and to see rest as a beautiful part of your homemaking rhythm, not something to feel guilty about. 🌿

What Does Scripture Say About Rest?

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
(Matthew 11:28)

“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul…”
(Psalm 23:2-3)

“And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while.”
(Mark 6:31)

Rest is a biblical invitation, not a sign of weakness, but of wisdom and trust. It acknowledges that we are not limitless, and that our strength comes from the Lord.

How to Practice Rest as a Christian Homemaker

1️⃣ Begin Each Day With the Lord

The truest rest begins in the heart.

Even a few quiet moments in the Word and in prayer each morning can set the tone for a day lived in His strength, not your own.

2️⃣ Build Small Pauses Into Your Day

Rest doesn’t have to mean a full day away — sometimes it looks like:
✅ A cup of tea on the porch
✅ Reading aloud with your children
✅ Sitting quietly for 5 minutes between tasks
✅ Listening to Scripture or worship music while folding laundry

These small pauses refresh both body and spirit.

3️⃣ Give Yourself Grace

Perfection is not the goal of homemaking, faithfulness is.

There will always be unfinished tasks, and it is okay to rest even when the to-do list is not complete. Trust that the Lord will provide the time and strength for what is truly needed.

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” (Colossians 3:23)

4️⃣ Prioritize Sabbath Rest

Set aside intentional time, whether a full Sunday or smaller moments, to truly rest in the Lord.

Worship, family time, and quiet reflection are not “unproductive”, they are life-giving and honoring to God.

5️⃣ Trust the Lord With What is Unfinished

This is one of the hardest lessons for me personally. But it is freeing to remember: our worth is not in how much we accomplish…it is in Christ alone.

Rest is an act of faith, trusting that He will care for our homes, our families, and our hearts as we obey His invitation to rest.

What is the Christian concept of rest?

In Scripture, rest is more than just physical relaxation, it is spiritual renewal and trust in the Lord.
True rest begins in the heart, as we trust Christ’s finished work on the cross and cease striving in our own strength. Jesus invites us to come to Him and find rest, rest for our souls, not just our bodies (Matthew 11:28-30).
Biblical rest also honors the principle of Sabbath, a rhythm of life that includes space for worship, renewal, and dependence on God’s provision.

What does God say about homemaking?

Homemaking is a worthy and purposeful calling in God’s eyes.
Titus 2:4-5 encourages women to love their families and be “keepers at home,” honoring the Lord in the daily rhythms of family life. Proverbs 31 paints a beautiful picture of a wise and diligent homemaker who blesses her household through her faithful work.
When done with the right heart, homemaking can glorify God and minister to others, it is not small work in His Kingdom!

What are the duties of a wife in a Christian home?

The duties of a Christian wife will look a little different in every home, but they are rooted in love, service, and faithfulness.
Scripture encourages wives to:
✅ Love and honor their husbands (Titus 2:4; Ephesians 5:33)
✅ Care for their homes and families (Proverbs 31; Titus 2:5)
✅ Support their husbands with respect and partnership (Ephesians 5:22-24)
✅ Nurture a heart of faith, kindness, and wisdom (Proverbs 31:26; 1 Peter 3:1-4)
Most of all, a Christian wife is called to walk closely with the Lord, and let her love for Him shape every area of her life at home.

What does rest look like for a Christian?

For a Christian, rest looks like trusting in God’s sufficiency, not striving in our own works.
It may include:
✅ Time in God’s Word and prayer
✅ Pausing to enjoy the goodness of creation
✅ Building intentional Sabbath rhythms
✅ Releasing the burdens we are not meant to carry
✅ Resting in the finished work of Christ, knowing our identity is secure in Him
Christian rest is not laziness. It is a humble acknowledgment that our strength comes from the Lord, and that He delights to refresh our souls.

Closing Encouragement

Dear friend, if you are weary in your homemaking, you are not alone.

But remember: the Lord delights not only in our service, but in our trust and rest in Him.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

As you build your homemaking rhythms this summer, I encourage you to intentionally include space for rest as a Christian homemaker, rest that restores your soul, honors the Lord, and refreshes your heart to serve joyfully.
