A Slow and Beautiful October

October came in quietly this year, soft light, cool mornings, and leaves that seemed to change overnight. The pace around our farmhouse slowed just a little, and I found myself noticing things I might’ve missed before: the steam rising from my coffee, the rhythm of a rake through the leaves, the smell of something baking in the oven.

It’s been a month of settling. Of tying up loose ends from summer and leaning into the cozy, slower days that fall brings. I always feel like October is a bridge, that gentle space between the hurry of harvest and the stillness of winter.

🏡 Around the Home

Inside, the house feels a little cozier now. Lamps come on earlier, and I’ve been reaching for blankets and warm slippers more often. I haven’t gone overboard with fall decorating, just a few pumpkins on the table, a candle burning in the kitchen, and some dried hydrangeas tucked into a crock.

There’s something about simple touches that feels right for this season. The older I get, the more I realize my home doesn’t need to impress, it just needs to welcome.

The laundry has been constant with the changing weather, and I’ve been working on keeping the kitchen counters cleared off, a daily battle for any homemaker, I’m sure. It’s amazing how peaceful a clean surface can feel when the rest of the day is full.

🌾 Around the Homestead

The garden has been put to bed for the year, tucked under layers of hay, leaves, and compost using the Ruth Stout method I’ve grown to love. It’s simple, forgiving, and a little messy, which makes it perfect for me.

We used the last of the apples earlier in the month, and I turned the scraps into apple scrap vinegar. It’s such an easy project, but there’s something satisfying about watching the jars slowly turn to vinegar over the weeks.

The animals are content, and the rhythm of farm chores has softened with the season. Fewer weeds to pull, less watering to do, just the steady routines of feeding, mucking, and tending. I love that predictability.

🍞 Around the Kitchen

The kitchen has been full this month, not fancy meals, but the kind that feel like home. My simple roasted chicken has been on repeat lately because it’s easy, hearty, and flavorful. One dish, simple ingredients, and supper is done.

I also baked a batch of pumpkin sourdough quick bread (twice, actually) because it disappeared so quickly the first time. Warm spices, a little sweetness from maple syrup, and that rich, pumpkin flavor, it tastes like fall itself.

There’s been plenty of tea, a few cozy simmer pots, and even some testing for new recipes I’ll be sharing soon. I don’t always love to cook, but I do love to nourish my family, and that difference has been on my mind a lot lately.

🕊 Around My Heart

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the seasons of motherhood. Our children grow, and so do we, though in different ways. As our son steps into adulthood, I’ve been learning what it looks like to cultivate relationship in a new way. The older I get, the more I realize that relationships with our adult children aren’t guaranteed. They’re a privilege when they choose to keep that connection.

When our children are young, they depend on us for everything, and our days are full of guiding and teaching. But as they grow, the relationship shifts, it becomes more about listening, respecting, and letting them find their footing while knowing we’re still a steady place to land.

It’s not easy, this letting go, but it’s holy work. And I’m realizing that cultivating a relationship with our children as adults looks a lot like tending a garden, gentle care, patience, and trust that growth takes time.

This month, I’ve been praying for wisdom in that. To love in a way that gives freedom, not control. To guide with grace instead of worry.

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
— Galatians 6:9

🌿 Closing Thoughts

October has reminded me that peace isn’t about perfection, it’s about perspective. It’s found in the way light filters through the windows, in the steady rhythm of homemaking, and in hearts that keep showing up with gratitude.

There’s something sacred about the slow work of home, the quiet, unseen moments that shape our days and anchor our families. I’m grateful for every bit of it.

As we move into November, my prayer is that we notice the blessings right in front of us, the ones that often look like ordinary grace.

Until next time, friend, may your home be warm, your heart thankful, and your days full of simple joy. 🍂
