How to Make Curtains from Sheets

Love the look of white, flowy curtains, but hate the price tag? Today I’ll show you how to turn bed sheets into elegant window coverings!

This is probably the easiest DIY that I have ever shared. As a matter of fact, it’s so easy I feel guilty calling it a “DIY”. A few years ago I was on the hunt for the perfect white curtains. You all know I love to save money, and the cheapest white window coverings I could find were about $15.00 a panel. Spending $30 for one window didn’t sound appealing to me. That’s when I decided I could make curtains from sheets!

I had a certain set of criteria that curtains had to meet. Our son has some pretty serious dust allergies, so it was imperative that I could wash the curtains as often as I needed. Most of the curtain panels I looked at didn’t accommodate. Bed sheets were the perfect solution! I can wash them as often as I please, and the water could be as warm as I needed it to kill the dust mites. These DIY curtains have been a definite win for us.

What you’ll need…

What I did…

Believe me when I say this is the easiest DIY ever. Open your sheets (I used full size flat sheets. They were the exact length I needed. Measure how long you want the curtains to be, and check the dimensions on the sheets) and throw them in the washer. This step would really be optional, but I just can’t stand the idea of not washing them before I hang them. Once they’re washed and dried you can either use them the full width, or cut them in half long ways like I did mine. Once I cut them in half long ways, I used some bonding tape to hem the rough edge I cut. The bonding tape is super easy to use, but not extremely durable. If you plan to wash them frequently you’ll probably want to hem them with a sewing machine. If you don’t sew, you can just keep using the bonding tape to re-hem them occasionally.

Once they’re hemmed, simply attach the hooks to the edge of the sheet you want to be the top. I left the larger factory hem as the bottom of my curtains.

Slide the hooks with the curtains on to your curtain rod, and TA-DA…Easy Custom curtains. That’s another huge advantage of using sheets as curtains. They are completely customizable. I know most of the time you can find beautiful flat sheets at discount stores so inexpensively. If you really wanted you could change them out seasonally. I think a fun floral print for spring would be darling. Perhaps a plaid for fall…The possibilities are nearly endless.

Do you have any DIY window coverings in your home? I have several different types, and I plan to share a couple more of my favorites soon.

A rod pocket version of my curtains from sheets:

I wanted to quickly update this post to show you how I used bed sheet to make curtains for our bedroom. This method did take a little sewing, but it is very basic. I cut the flat sheet in half, and sewed that edge up. I used the thick hemmed end as my rod pocket. Measuring down an inch from the top of the sheet, I sewed a straight line right in the bigger hemmed edge. That created a pocket for me on each panel. Easy peasy! They look so nice, too!

I hope you all have a wonderful day. As always, thanks so much for stopping by the farmhouse.
